WINNERSH, England— Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, was honored with two prestigious industry awards at the recent 2009 International Broadcasting Convention (IBC2009) convention in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The company won TV Technology Europe magazine's STAR (Superior Technology Award Recipient) Award for its new cost-effective X50™ frame synchronizer/converter — a single-channel platform that delivers exceptional quality and functionality. The award-winning Harris series of 1RU processors also includes the X85™ and X75™ platforms. The X50 features up/down/cross conversion with optional 1080p 3 Gb/s, eight analog and four AES inputs and outputs, and 16 channels of embedded audio processing. Included as standard are color correction, closed caption/teletext capabilities, control and monitoring via a built-in Web server, support for Active Format Description (AFD) and two fully controllable Aspect Ratio Converters. The energy-efficient X50 processor is ideal for a range of broadcast workflows — from small stations and OB vans to production studios and networks.
Harris also was honored with Broadcast Engineering magazine's Pick Hit award for its Predator II-GX™ — a complete HD control and monitoring solution available in a 1 or 2RU frame. Providing an impressive combination of high-end features at an excellent price-point, the Predator II-GX offers built-in autosensing support for multiple input standards, as well as options for graphics input display and integrated audio monitoring.
The Predator II-GX also has the ability to take on additional inputs — making it a truly expandable system. Featuring low system latency, a highly intuitive user interface and extensive metadata processing, Predator II-GX multiviewers meet the demands of space-restrictive environments. The compact design greatly reduces power consumption, resulting in low long-term operational costs. Predator II-GX is ideal for control rooms, outside broadcast vans, production centers or monitoring facilities that require a flexible, scalable architecture.
Harris has a strong legacy of technology honors for both its multiviewers and series of 1RU processors. At NAB 1998, the former Zandar Technologies, which Harris acquired in 2007, won its first Pick Hit award for the development of the MVG 16 multi-video window display card. With this product, Zandar pioneered multi-image display and monitoring in the broadcast market. Harris also has received Pick Hit awards for its 1RU X75 and X85 platforms, won in 2005 and 2008, respectively.
"Broadcasters came to IBC2009 looking for technology solutions that would allow them to do more with less," said Tim Thorsteinson, president, Harris Broadcast Communications. "Our new X50 and Predator-II GX products were specifically designed to enable broadcasters to operate more efficiently, lower their expenses and increase revenue streams, while still providing the highest levels of performance and functionality. Winning these prestigious industry awards for some of our newest products underscores the value of the Harris commitment to developing highly interoperable and cost-effective products that create efficiencies that today's broadcasters need to stay competitive."
The TV Technology STAR Award (Superior Technology Award Recipient) is designed to celebrate and showcase the preeminent technological innovations available to the broadcast industry. TV Technology Europe's editor reviewed a variety of products, examined the technical applications and their overall contribution to the industry, and then chose 25 winners. Broadcast Engineering Pick Hit Awards are the industry's longest-running new product technology awards. An anonymous panel of Broadcast Engineering readers — who are working professionals in the broadcast, post and network and satellite industries — selected the winners.
