WESTMINSTER CHOIR COLLEGE RECORDS WITH SENNHEISER

The Sennheiser K6 Microphone Series capture the performances of the esteemed Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey.

PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY NOVEMBER 2009: As a premier training institution for performers and educators, Westminster Choir College of Rider University knows the value of a quality recording. When it came time to upgrade their performance spaces and classrooms with recording technology, it was Sennheiser that was trusted to capture those performances.

"The administration realized that this was a service that they needed to provide for the professors and the students," says Darren Sussman, owner of Reid Sound, Inc., the company responsible for designing and installing the systems. "They needed to be able to listen back to their rehearsals so they could critique performances. They also wanted to be able to record recitals and other performances for use as audition and demo recordings."

Three performances spaces and two classrooms were chosen to receive the recording technology, although more spaces may receive recording systems in the future. While the systems are similar throughout the campus, small changes were made depending on the space. "For the classrooms, the recordings were meant primarily for rehearsal purposes, so we were able to use the Sennheiser K6 Series of microphones," says Sussman. "The performance spaces have better acoustics and were meant to be used for recording recitals, so a higher quality recording was expected. In those spaces we chose the Sennheiser MKH 8000 Series microphones. The level of detail that these microphones capture is simply amazing."

In addition to the Sennheiser microphones, each space is equipped with a Marantz PMD580 network recorder, allowing all recordings to be archived in one central location on campus over the existing data network.

"It's a very good, easy-to-use system," Sussman says. "Everyone on campus couldn't wait to start using it."
