Harris Corporation Expands and Enhances Integrated Routing Solution for Italian Broadcaster EI Towers
Posted on Thursday, September 8, 2011

Highlights

  • EI Towers (EIT) completes master control solution with Harris® Platinum™ router expansion
  • Integrated Harris router solution saves EIT approximately 230 RU of rack space and reduces power consumption by 70 percent
  • New embedded frame sync enhancement is first deployment of its kind

MELBOURNE, FL/AMSTERDAM, September 8, 2011 (IBC2011, Stand 7.G20) — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has expanded an existing Harris® Platinum™ integrated routing solution for EI Towers (EIT), adding frame synchronizers to every input module on the router — an first in the industry that greatly simplifies EIT's master control operation.

EIT, the network operator of Italian media company Mediaset Group, is in charge of the central switching for all of Mediaset Group's contribution signals. The initial integrated router deployment at EIT two years ago, built around five Platinum routers, was the first implementation of Platinum audio mux-demux technology and the first-ever integration of audio mux-demux inside a broadcast router.

Harris Platinum is the only router on the market to support internal frame synchronization. The new EIT router upgrade eliminates approximately 400 external frame synchronizers, and minimizes cabling, rack space, maintenance costs, complexity and power consumption. EIT estimates a 70 percent reduction in power usage, and has downsized about 230 rack units of equipment to 32.

EIT's central 512x512 router is now fully populated, with internal frame synchronizing audio de-embedders on every input, and internal embedders on every output. This enables the Platinum router to process and route signals between the discrete and embedded audio within the same frame, regardless of the source or destination.

EIT also uses a 1024x128 Platinum router configured with eight integrated Harris® multiviewers, centralizing its signal monitoring functionality within the routing solution. The complete installation also features the Harris® 6800+™ core processing platform, Videotek® TVM Series™ waveform monitors for test and measurement, and IconLogo™ channel branding products. The Harris® CCS Navigator™ network monitoring and control system also provides graphical navigation and device configuration among other applications.

In broadcast communications, Harris offers products, systems and services that provide interoperable workflow solutions for broadcast, cable, satellite and out-of-home networks. The Harris ONE™ solution brings together highly integrated and cost-effective products that enable advanced media workflows for emerging content delivery business models.
