Harris Corporation Welcomes Publication of SMPTE Recommended Practice for Implementation of BXF
Posted on Thursday, October 22, 2009

DENVER, October 22, 2009 — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, today confirmed its full support for the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) Recommended Practice for the implementation of the Broadcast eXchange Format (BXF).

BXF is a data exchange format that standardizes interfaces among systems dealing with content metadata, content movement, schedules and as-run information. The recently published SMPTE RP 2021-9:2009 supplements the existing BXF Standards and simplifies the creation of interoperable BXF applications.

"Because BXF enables adopters to achieve increased operational efficiency and significant cost savings, as well as increased and all-new revenues, broadcasters have been highly motivated to press vendors for implementations of this new SMPTE standard," said Chris Lennon, director of integration and standards, Harris Broadcast Communications. "While we're already seeing considerable use of BXF in the field now, I expect the publication of this Recommended Practice to expand implementations both in scope and across broadcast operations."

Development of the Recommended Practice document took place under the SMPTE BXF Working Group chaired by Lennon, a broadcasting industry veteran who has led the development of well over 100 interfacing and integration projects among broadcast systems. Substantial contributions to the project were made by fellow Harris employees Adam Gotlieb, Joe Klingensmith and Donna Silveri.

Harris has implemented BXF throughout its media software suite to enable interoperable systems to communicate faster and more effectively. To date, Harris has successfully implemented BXF into 11 of its own products, making it a key component of its Harris ONE™ strategy — ensuring seamless interoperability across its portfolio. Industry acceptance of the BXF standard continues, with many other vendors beginning to adopt the standard as a method of exchanging data across applications.

Harris Broadcast Communications offers products, systems and services that provide interoperable workflow solutions for broadcast, cable, satellite and out-of-home networks. The Harris ONE™ solution brings together highly integrated and cost-effective products that enable advanced media workflows for emerging content delivery business models.
